Shrove Tuesday, also known as Pancake Tuesday, is the day that immediately precedes Ash Wednesday, marking the commencement of Lent in Western Christian churches. The date of Shrove Tuesday varies each year, falling between February 2 and March 9, contingent upon the timing of Easter.

“The term “Shrove,” stemming from the Old English “shrive,” denotes the sacramental act of confession as a preparatory ritual for Lent, a practice deeply rooted in medieval European traditions. Although modern interpretations of Shrove Tuesday may emphasise introspection and spiritual evaluation, the day has transformed into a lively festival in numerous locales. A prominent illustration is the Shrove Tuesday Carnival in Binche, Belgium, where participants known as Gilles—drawn from a clown-like archetype in commedia dell’arte—conduct processions throughout the town. These revellers don intricately designed costumes that feature red, yellow, and black national colours, complemented by wax masks. Their ensemble is further embellished with ostrich-feather hats, and they engage the crowds by tossing oranges to onlookers, a custom rich in the pageantry and communal vibrancy emblematic of such celebrations. Rove,” derived from the Old English word “shrive,” refers to the sacramental act of confession as a preparatory ritual for Lent, a practice with deep historical roots in medieval European traditions. In contemporary interpretations, Shrove Tuesday often emphasises introspection and spiritual evaluation; however, the day has evolved into a vibrant celebration in various regions.
The Shrove Tuesday Carnival in Binche, Belgium, is a notable example of this transformation. These revellers wear intricately designed costumes that showcase red, yellow, and black national colours, complemented by wax masks. Their attire is further enhanced by ostentatious ostrich-feather hats, and they engage with the crowd by tossing oranges to onlookers, a tradition that embodies the pageantry and communal spirit characteristic of such festivities.
As the final day before the austerity of the Lenten fast, Shrove Tuesday has many customs about food—in particular, sweet foods containing eggs, sugar, and fat, which were commonly forbidden during Lent and would otherwise go to waste in the six and a half weeks between Ash Wednesday and Easter. Pancakes are the traditional choice in several European countries; the day is known as Pancake Day or Pancake Tuesday in Ireland and in many Commonwealth countries. Similarly, decadent pre-Lenten treats include pa̡czki, fruit-filled deep-fried pastries similar to doughnuts enjoyed in Poland and in ethnic Polish communities in the United States. An iconic part of Mardi Gras(“Fat Tuesday”) in New Orleans is the king cake, an iced ring-shaped pastry sprinkled with gold, green, and purple sugar and typically contains a plastic figurine representing the baby Jesus. Traditionally, the person who receives the piece of king cake containing the figurine is named “king” or “queen” of the Mardi Gras festivities and is obligated to host the next party of the season.

The Eight Promises of Jesus
to all those who honour His Holy Face
All those who honour My Face in a spirit of reparation will by so
doing, perform the office of the pious Veronica. According to the care
they take in making reparation to My Face, disfigured by blasphemers, so
willl take care of their souls which have been disfigured by sin.
The face is the seal of the Divinity, which has the virtue of reproducing in souls the image of God.
Those who, by words, prayers or writing, defend My cause in this
Work of Reparation I will defend before My Father and will give
them My Kingdom.
By offering My Face to My Eternal Father, nothing will be refused and
the conversion of many sinners will be obtained.
By My Holy Face, they will work wonders and appease the anger of God and draw down mercy on sinners.
As in a kingdom, they can procure all that is desired with a coin
stamped with the King’s effigy, so, in the Kingdom of Heaven, they will
obtain all they desire with the precious coin of My Holy Face.
Individuals who, in their earthly existence, reflect on the intricate details of the Wounds on My Face shall attain a state of divine brilliance in the realm of Divinity.
They will that in by receive Heaven.
The souls exist in a form reflective of their essence; O My countenance, they are luminous and will perpetually emit a brilliance characterized by the unique and fluctuating qualities of My divine realm. Observe it, resplendent with celestial glory.
I will advocate for their interests, ensure continuity, and guarantee their ultimate resilience.
