Venice, the capital of northern Italy’s Veneto region, is planning to experiment with an admission fee for daytrippers next year in an effort to manage the enormous flow of tourists drawn to its historic canals, the city council has announced.

The fee will be 5 euros a day ($8) for visitors over the age of 14.

Why is the city planning on charging tourists?

Venice has been suffering from over-tourism for a number of years. The city attracts millions of travellers every year, which causes more and more locals to leave.

In 2022 the province had about 8.9 million tourist arrivals, as opposed to the pre-pandemic 9.9 million visitors in 2019, according to the online data gathering platform, Statista.

The number of people permanently living in Venice is just over 250,000.

In July, UNESCO experts recommended that Venice and its lagoon be added to its list of World Heritage in Danger, claiming that Italy was not doing enough to protect the city from the impact of climate change and mass tourism.

The aim of the fee was to find “a new balance between the rights of those who live, study or work in Venice and those who visit the city,” Venice tourism councillor Simone Venturini said.

It is not a money-making move, he added, saying the fee would only cover the cost of administering the scheme.

When will visitors start paying?

The fee will be applied on a trial basis for 30 days next year, focusing mainly on spring bank holidays and summer weekends when tourism numbers are at their peak.
