Metro front page
Many front pages focus on on Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s apology to MPs over being fined for breaching lockdown rules for attending a party in Downing Street. The Metro reports the PM acknowledged public anger, but said it never occurred to him he had breached Covid rules amid “raucous calls” for him to resign from the opposition benches.
Guardian front page
The Guardian’s headline quotes Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer’s reaction to Mr Johnson’s apology, who described the PM as a “man without shame” during “furious” exchanges in the House of Commons. MPs will have a chance to vote on an investigation into whether Mr Johnson lied to Parliament in previous statements to the House of Commons about parties in Downing Street, the paper reports.
Times front page
Tory MPs will be told to block any investigation into whether the PM misled the house when it comes to a vote on Wednesday, reports the Times. Conservative whips have ordered all MPs to be in Westminster to vote against Labour’s motion to refer Mr Johnson to the Commons privileges committee for contempt of Parliament over the row, the paper says.
Mirror front page
The Mirror has issued a “message to Tory MPs” over the possible investigation, calling for them to allow the inquiry to go ahead. The paper says they have a choice between a vote for “integrity and decency” or for a “liar and a cheat”, adding their choice will “define the character of our nation” for years to come.
i front page
The i also picks up on criticism of the PM, but this time from his own backbenches. The paper’s headline quotes former Tory chief whip Mark Harper, who called for Mr Johnson to resign and said he was “not worth of great office”, before publicly submitting a letter of no confidence in the PM.
Daily Express front page
“What a waste of time!” headlines the Daily Express, arguing there is “so much more at stake” for the country than the ongoing row. The paper says Mr Johnson’s “humble” apology to MPs was rejected by Mr Starmer, who it said “refused to address the real issues facing Britain”.
Daily Star front page
The Daily Star describes the PM as a “truth dodger” who has vowed to “Klingon” to power. The paper features a picture of Mr Johnson edited to resemble one of the iconic Star Trek humanoids, describing him as being in a “Spock of bother” amid the claims he misled MPs.
Financial Times front page
The Financial Times leads with projections that the UK will be the slowest growing G7 economy next year. The International Monetary Fund has forecast Britain’s economy will grow by just 1.2% in 2023, as the cost of living crisis and tax rises set to “slow economic activity to a crawl”, the paper reports.
Daily Mail front page
The Daily Mail reports on plans to change the highway code to allow motorists in self-driving cars to watch TV going up to 37mph. The paper says autonomous vehicles could be on British roads within months under the new plans, which would require them to remain in the same lane as well to take their eyes of the road.
Telegraph front page
The prime minister has accused the BBC and the Archbishop of Canterbury of being more critical of No 10 than Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Telegraph reports. Mr Johnson made the remarks at a meeting of Tory backbenchers, where he accused the broadcaster and Justin Welby of having “misconstrued” the government’s plans to send asylum seekers deemed to have entered the UK unlawfully to Rwanda.
Sun front page
The Sun’s front page splashes the news that former Oasis front man Liam Gallagher needs new hips. The paper reports the 49-year-old musician is in “agony” with arthritis which can only be fixed by surgery to replace them.
BBC News Daily on Facebook Messenger

The front pages are dominated by Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s apology in the House of Commons over being fined for breaking Covid lockdown rules.

The Metro goes with the headline “I’m Truly Sorry”, while the I quotesTory backbencher Mark Harper, who said Boris Johnson is “not worthy of great office””.

The Guardian opts to reflect comments from Sir Keir Starmer, after the Labour leader called the prime minister “a man without shame”. The Daily Star calls Mr Johnson a ‘Klingon PM’ alongside a mocked up picture of him as a Star Trek villain.

Meanwhile the Daily Mirror has printed a front page appeal to Tory MPs to remove Mr Johnson from office. It says Conservative backbenchers can either “vote for integrity and decency… or for a liar and a cheat” when a motion to refer the matter to the Commons privileges committee goes before MPs on Thursday.

The Times looks at efforts by Conservative whips to win that vote, with some MPs telling the paper they’ve been ordered to attend Parliament to block the inquiry – despite previously been given permission to be absent.

The Daily Express comes to the PM’s defence, with its headline calling the issue a “waste of time” when “so much more is at stake”.

The Daily Mail makes no reference to the story on its front page, focussing instead on what it calls the ‘Road Revolution’ – which will see people using self-driving cars allowed to watch television and films.

The Daily Telegraph says the new guidance in the Highway Code has been introduced ahead of the anticipated approval of driverless cars in the UK later this year.

Meanwhile, the Financial Times says President Biden is being urged to sanction lawyers in the UK who’ve worked for Russian oligarchs.

It reports that Democratic congressman Steve Cohen has written to Secretary of State Antony Blinken calling for US travel bans for those who’ve helped rich individuals close to the Kremlin to take action against investigative journalists.
