Satellites have captured imagery of a convoy of Russian forces that had been slowly advancing towards the Ukraine capital having dispersed and redeployed into nearby locations.

The 64-kilometre-long convoy was first noticed by satellite imagery at the end of February, days after Russian forces invaded Ukraine.

Recent satellite imagery from Maxar Technologies showed the long line of vehicles, tanks and artillery has broken up and been redeployed, with armoured units seen in towns near the Antonov Airport north of Kyiv.

Vehicles identified as resupply trucks and probable multiple rocket launchers were located by Maxar moving into firing position in Berestyanka, to Kyiv’s northwest.

Some of the vehicles have moved into forests in nearby Lubyanka, Maxar reported.

The convoy originated in Belarus and had been making its way south toward Kyiv.

It had massed outside Kyiv early last week, but its advance appeared to have stalled amid reports of food and fuel shortages.

Images on social media over the past several days showed Russian tanks and military vehicles idle on the side of roads.

In addition, the muddy ground made it difficult for the Russians to go off-road to make more progress along other routes. Photos and videos show vehicles stuck in the mud.

The satellite images following the convoy over recent days showed trucks appearing to carry self-propelled artillery pieces alongside BMP3 armoured carriers and Russian tanks.

Fuel tankers and trucks carrying food, ammunition and an estimated 15,000 troops appeared to make up other parts of the convoy.

Along parts of the route, the units were travelling two or three vehicles abreast on the road, but in other sections, they were spaced out, earlier satellite images provided by Maxar Technologies showed.

Additional ground force deployments and ground attack helicopter units were seen in southern Belarus near the Ukraine border.

A senior US defence official said Ukrainian troops had been targeting the convoy with ground fire, including shoulder-fired Javelin anti-tank missiles provided by Western countries.

The most significant impact of those attacks is that they struck vehicles at the front of the convoy, essentially creating a roadblock.

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said the Russians likely did not anticipate such problems or the extent of the Ukrainian resistance.

Western leaders had feared the influx of ground forces was a bid by Russian President Vladimir Putin to topple the government and install a Kremlin-friendly regime.

Western intelligence agencies and analysts speculated this might have been an attempt to circle Kyiv and put the city under siege, cutting off supplies and escape routes before moving in.
