When Russian president Vladimir Putin ordered an invasion of Ukraine in late February with the aim of overrunning major cities and forcing political accommodation, some analysts predicted a swift victory.

As the Russian military launched a land, air and sea assault along four separate axes, that prediction felt inevitable.

Over the past month, it has become clear that many of Russia’s military objectives have not been met.

As the invasion enters its second month, thousands of lives have been lost, cities have been levelled and infrastructure has been demolished.
