An emergency Cobra meeting is being held by ministers after the Met Office issued a rare red alert for severe wind.

Storm Eunice is set to blast Wales and south-west England tomorrow with winds reaching 100mph.

Much of the UK has already been battered by storm Dudley who swept in overnight, leaving thousands of homes without power.

A red warning is the highest level of alert the Met Office can issue, meaning there is a clear ‘danger to life’ to anyone caught out in the strong winds.

The alert covers the coastline of Devon and Cornwall as well as the south coast of Wales and will come into effect from 7am on Friday.

It warns of ‘flying debris’ causing damage to buildings and homes, with roofs blown off and power lines brought down.

The Government confirmed Cabinet Office minister Michael Ellis will lead the Cobra meeting today ‘to discuss the response to Storm Dudley and Storm Eunice’.

Northern Ireland, northern England and Scotland up to Perth are under a yellow alert for wind and snow.

Eunice is expected to crash in with winds reaching 90mph tomorrow, bringing with it the chance of heavy snow and blizzards.

Shocking pictures have already revealed the extent of the damage wrought by Dudley, with fallen trees and large waves smashing coastal towns.

It means there could be power cuts, roads could be shut and damage to buildings and homes is likely, with a risk of roofs being blown off and power lines brought down, the Met Office says.

A yellow weather warning for wind is also in place in our area today, with gusts of wind above 40mph set to blow through our area all day and into the early hours.

It comes as strong winds of up to 90mph brought by Storm Dudley could pose a danger to life on Wednesday in the UK, forecasters have warned.

The Met Office has issued an amber warning for “very strong and disruptive” winds which could cause widespread chaos, including a “good chance” of power cuts and disruption to transport services.

Met Office forecasters have said the conditions are caused by Storm Dudley which will move across the northern half of the nation from Wednesday night into Thursday morning, and Storm Eunice which follows.

Storm Dudley is expected to bring gusts of up to 80-90mph on exposed coasts and hills of Scotland, with 60-70mph possible further inland.

Meanwhile, Storm Eunice is predicted to bring heavy rain and possible snowfalls on high ground from the Midlands northwards.

Where snow does fall, the high winds are likely to create blizzard conditions, the Met Office has said.
