“Spare a thought for those out in the Riverland, though,” meteorologist Tina Donaldson told ABC Radio Adelaide earlier on Monday morning.
“Renmark — their temperature just keeps on dropping. They’re down to -5C and that’s a new May minimum temperature record for them.”
Local residents reported that dog bowls and birdbaths had frozen over, and that windscreens and public spaces had frosted up.
“[It’s] the last time I’m walking in the oval in the mornings,” Berri local Nicola Angouras said.
“It was like they poured a lake on it with the amount of water.”
The all-time record low for Renmark Airport was set on June 18, 1998, when it was -6.1C.
Parts of the Adelaide Hills were also covered in frost on Monday morning.
One local resident wrote on social media that while there was “no thermometer” on their property, “our largest cattle trough is frozen over”.
The weather bureau said temperatures should warm up on Tuesday before getting cold again later in the week.
