Surprisingly, this “raccoon dog” is only that in name and appearance and is not closely related to the raccoon at all.
The raccoon dog, or Mangut or Tanuki, is indigenous to East Asia.
Their lifespan in captivity is roughly 11 years, and little is known about their lifespan in the wild.
They are a part of the Canidae family and are the only canids known to hibernate.
They are omnivores whose diet consists mainly of insects, rodents, amphibians, birds, fish, reptiles, molluscs, fruits, nuts, and berries.
Wolves are their main predators.
Like foxes, they do not bark, uttering instead a growl followed by a long-drawn melancholy whine. I think they are pretty cute
