Patience is a virtue that is becoming increasingly difficult to practice in today’s fast-paced world.
We have become accustomed to expecting instant results in almost every aspect of life.
The farmer, the gardener, and the craftsman all know the importance of patience.
You cannot rush the weather or control the sunshine, and manual work is often slow and painstaking.
However, we are accustomed to instant replays of sports games and use microwaves and instant pots to cook meals in minutes.
Cars are getting faster, and computers provide information as quickly as we can type our queries.
James, in his letter to the early Christians, is reminding them that they need patience as they await the glorious return of Jesus.
We, too, need to practice patience.
This means living each day as if Jesus is coming soon and following his teachings, even if we may have to do so for many years.
Ultimately, it does not matter if Jesus returns during our lifetime.
What is important is that we live each day in a way worthy of his teachings.
We will all be judged at the time of our death, and we do not want to be found unworthy.
I do not worry about the end of the world for this reason.
I only need to worry about my destiny!
What specific teachings of Jesus should we follow daily to be considered worthy?
Make daily, how we live our lives and our commitment to justice will all determine whether we spend eternity in the kingdom of the Lord.
The kingdom of the Lord is within reach for us, even though we do not know the day or the hour.
Let us work each day to be prepared to meet Jesus when he returns for us.
