The power of suggestion significantly influences our behaviour and desires. For instance, seeing a food advertisement might trigger hunger, just as hearing a cough or seeing someone yawn can prompt us to respond similarly. This demonstrates that when we focus on something—whether it’s a temptation to overeat, smoke, or engage in other undesirable behaviours—we inadvertently strengthen our desire for it. Instead of adopting a resistance mindset, like telling ourselves to stop certain habits, shifting our attention away from those temptations is more effective.
We often draw deeper into those very behaviours when we dwell on what we want to avoid. Temptation captures our attention, sparks our emotions, and leads to actions based on those feelings. Rather than fight with the temptation, ignoring it can be a better strategy. This might involve leaving a tempting situation or diverting our focus completely. For instance, turning off the TV, stepping away from gossip, or even exiting a movie can help break the cycle of temptation. Ultimately, staying clear of what entices us is more effective than engaging with it.
