Paul refused to rely on the righteousness of his own. He trusted instead in the “righteousness of God, ” meaning “the character that comes from God. ” That is imputed righteousness, one that is credited to us although we did not perform it. By faith in Jesus, we receive that righteousness. It covers us like a garment, pure and white.
