Today, the Christian faith experiences notable divisions. It is essential to clarify that I am not solely referring to denominational differences. As long as a denomination accurately represents the message of Jesus and the Good News, there is no inherent issue. The concern arises when individuals identifying as “Christian” promote a false gospel. Much like the Jewish leaders who challenged Jesus during his ministry due to their discontent with his teachings, contemporary voices resist fully embracing his complete message.
The Apostle Paul conveys the notion of unity in his declaration that there is “One Lord, One Faith, and One Baptism, One Lord of All.” If this assertion holds true, it raises the question of why we deem certain baptisms more valid than others. Furthermore, if the Lord is the sovereign of all, we must consider why some claim a greater connection to Him than others.
In his first letter to the Corinthians, Paul admonishes them for their divisions, where some proclaimed, “I am of Paul, and I am of Apollos,” among other divisions. He reminds them that their baptism into Christ should unify them. Ultimately, the identity of the individual who facilitated one’s journey to Christ is less significant than the collective act of coming to Him. It is incumbent upon us to collaborate in fostering a spirit of unity among all who have been blessed through baptism into Christ Jesus, our Lord.
