I often think about what I would do if I were in the place of some of the most famous characters in the Bible. How could Thomas doubt Jesus after spending so much time with him? How could Judas betray Jesus after witnessing so many miracles? Why wouldn’t the followers of Moses be willing to do anything he asked, considering all that he had done for them? I often believe that I would act differently than these characters. If only God would give me a sign as strong as the one given to them, then I would be more specific about how to behave.
Upon reflection, I realise the selfishness in demanding a sign similar to theirs. Isn’t my own life a sign enough? Isn’t my relationship with God a sufficient sign? Jesus Christ came to Earth and died for us. If I still need a more robust sign, I wonder what I would have done differently than even the most selfish characters in the Bible.
In the Bible, manna was sent from Heaven to Earth. For us, Jesus Christ is our manna. Just as sustenance was sent for the disciples of Moses, Jesus was sent so that we all may be his disciples. He is our sustenance, our sign, our manna. Doubt leads to hunger, and belief leads to nourishment. While we have many characters to compare ourselves to, ultimately, the choice is ours.
