“Always remember the Lord, who freed you from the chains of slavery and led you out of Egypt.”
Being free from bondage, sin, and old habits is undoubtedly pure joy. However, we mustn’t forget how we were rescued. Our rescue should serve as a constant reminder that it was God who showed us the way out of our struggles. This doesn’t mean we should keep dwelling on our past mistakes and wallow in guilt. Instead, it’s a call to acknowledge our weakness and recognise God’s strength and grace that pulled us out of that dark place.
When we forget our Rescuer and start taking credit for our rescue, our pride deceives us into thinking that we can do it all on our own, leading us back to that old familiar place of bondage. Therefore, we must never forget that our rescue was not a result of our efforts but was God’s doing. This awareness helps us to stay humble and grateful, and it keeps us from falling back into the traps of our old habits and sins.
It’s a joy to be free from bondage, from sin, and from old habits. And it’s good that we do not forget our rescue. Not so that we can wallow in the guilt of our past, but so that we can never forget that it was God who rescued us. For when we lose sight of our Rescuer and claim the credit ourselves, our pride turns us right back to that old place of bondage.
