Criticising Others
“Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye,’ and look, a plank is in your eye? Hypocrite! First, remove the plank from your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”
—Matthew 7:4-5 (NKJV)
I often see my weaknesses, and it’s easy to blame others for them. It’s painful to envision myself as less than I think I am, so living in a self-imposed bubble is much more comfortable, believing I’m better than everyone else. However, criticising others won’t make my faults disappear, nor will it help me develop the character that God wants me to have.
The Bible says in Matthew 7:4 (NIV), “How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is a plank in your eye all the time?” Remembering that only God can change hearts and truly transform people is essential. Criticising others not only brings them down but also brings me down.
Instead of focusing on the faults of others, I need to look inward. I should ask God to help me confront my shortcomings—so much so that I hate my sins more than I hate the faults of others. Then, I can ask God to change me and help me become who He wants me to be.
