The challenge of our children today

I completely understand the struggle we face when trying to teach our children the values of right and wrong in today’s world.

It can often feel overwhelming.

While humility is an important aspect to consider, I’ve chosen to focus on something that resonates deeply with many of us right now: the challenge of guiding our young people as they navigate complex moral landscapes.

Take, for example, the conversations we need to have about sexual morality with preteens and teens.

It’s disheartening to see how many television programs disregard the teachings of Scripture, opting instead to glorify behaviours that can be genuinely harmful to our children’s mental and emotional well-being.

When these portrayals present bed-hopping as the norm, it’s understandable why our kids might think there’s nothing wrong with it—after all, they see it everywhere and often hear the sentiment that “everybody does it.”

We also witness the inconsistencies in our own parenting.

How often have we scolded our children for using inappropriate language when we might slip and use those exact words?

We know that stealing is wrong, yet some bring home supplies from work as if it’s acceptable.

Lying can feel justified when it’s about protecting our reputation or avoiding conflict.

We all recognise the hypocrisy that Jesus pointed out about the scribes and Pharisees, and it’s a gentle reminder that we might also need to reflect on our own actions.

It’s important to ask ourselves: Am I truly living in a way that aligns with what I want to teach my children, grandchildren, and others who look to me as a Christian role model?

If we find our answer is “no,” we can take that as an opportunity to grow and change.

Together, we can strive to embody the values we wish to instil in the next generation, ensuring our actions reflect our words.
