Following the Way of Jesus
Discipleship is at the heart of the Christian life. To be a disciple means to learn, follow Jesus, and shape our lives after His example.
Jesus tells us that the starting point of following Him is to deny ourselves. Denying ourselves means choosing to place Jesus’s desires above our own. It requires us to acknowledge that we do not have all the answers or know the right path to navigate life. Discipleship is not a one-time action but a daily commitment we must live out throughout our lives. We will spend our entire lives striving to become more like Jesus.
Jesus modelled a life that included suffering on the cross. When we deny ourselves, we choose to humbly follow Him. As we grow more like Him, we will also need to take up our own cross. We will experience suffering for doing good and resisting temptations that may seem enticing at the moment but ultimately lead us away from God. However, when we bear our suffering, we represent Christ to those around us.
