Strongest winds since 1946
The wild weather continues after powerful storms ripped through south-east Queensland overnight, damaging homes and overturning light aircraft.
Heavy rain, large hail and record-breaking winds up to 169 kph were felt at Archerfield Airport, in Brisbane’s south, where nine planes were damaged.
Prior to this storm, the previous record at Archerfield was 143 kph, back in December of 1946.
While some private hangars had their doors damaged, there’s no structural damage to the airport and it’s operating as normal today.Loading…
Most of the planes damaged overnight were small aircraft.
Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) senior forecaster Shane Kennedy said “anything above 125kph is a destructive gust”, comparing winds on Friday night “to what we see at a low-end category three tropical cyclone”.
“It is also within the range of the second-lowest tornado as well,” he said.
Clean up underway after Friday night storm
SES volunteers have been busy, with 182 call outs since Friday afternoon.
Lowry Boyd from the SES said about 40 of the jobs had been trees fallen on roads and people’s properties, and 140 had concerned roof leaks.
“We’re conscious there’s more storms predicted for this afternoon, so we’re trying to complete those [jobs] as quickly as we can,” he told ABC Radio Brisbane this morning.
He said SES crews were scattered across Brisbane, and calls had been made to surrounding teams who would travel over to help once they were finished cleaning up their own patch.
Mr Boyd said volunteers were being encouraged to stay hydrated and take plenty of breaks to ensure they don’t succumb to the ongoing heatwave.
On Friday night, a 30-year-old man died after emergency services found him unconscious near fallen powerlines.
“I’d also like to remind all the residents that, if they see any powerlines down, don’t go anywhere near them — [instead] call Energex so they can come and de-energise the lines [and] make it safe,” Mr Boyd said.
Rob Stork from Energex this morning confirmed about 9,500 properties across south-east Queensland were without power — down from 35,500 customers at about 10:30pm yesterday.
He said crews were working to repair the network after “crazy” winds saw sheets of roofing and other debris end up on powerlines.
“Energex received over 250 reports of powerlines down through those storms yesterday and most of that was caused by things like trees, roofing iron, other debris being blown or falling onto those power lines,” Mr Stork said.
“So it has really caused some extensive damage, which is going to take some time to repair.
“Our crews have been hard at it overnight, and certainly made some good gains, but [there’s] a lot more work to be done today.”
Mr Stork said the worst hit area was Brisbane’s southern suburbs, including Moorooka, Rocklea and Salisbury.Loading…
Meanwhile, travellers looking to depart Brisbane today could face delays.
Peter Doherty from Brisbane Airport Corporation said 19 flights into Brisbane Airport, along with six outbound, had been cancelled today as a result of yesterday’s weather.
“This morning we’ve seen around two dozen flights cancelled in and out of Brisbane as a result of that severe weather last night,” Mr Doherty said.
“A number of aircraft and crew ended up in different cities because of flight diversions so those services weren’t available [earlier] today.”
Fast-moving storm smashes through southern areas of south-east Queensland, strong winds and hail bring down trees and damage property
Dangerous thunderstorms have swept across Queensland’s south-east bringing down trees and damaging property.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) recorded a wind gust of 169kph at Archerfield Airport in southern Brisbane at 4:31pm — more severe than the strongest winds recorded during Cyclone Jasper.
The bureau said several suburbs in Brisbane’s south recorded 3-4 centimetre hail.
Storm ‘intensified’ as it hit Brisbane
Mr Kennedy confirmed the “severe thunderstorms” developed near the NSW border on Friday then started tracking north-east.
“That storm intensified as it moved through the southern Brisbane suburbs,” the forecaster told the ABC on Saturday.
He said the intense winds were not particularly common for the city, “but we do see it every now and then”.
While northern parts of Queensland were concerned with ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper, Mr Kennedy said cloud lifting in the state’s capital made for “hot and humid” conditions that left the atmosphere unstable.
Due to how quickly rainfall impacted the region, Mr Kennedy said “there likely was some flash flooding” on Friday night. However BOM’s current flood warnings only concern Far North Queensland.
Free waste drop-off
Brisbane City Council was assisting with clean up this morning, clearing fallen trees from roads and parks across the suburbs.
But if you’re cleaning up your property today and aren’t sure what to do with all the green waste, council can also help.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said green waste could be disposed of at Willawong Resource Recovery Centre, near Archerfield, for free this weekend.
Independent Councillor for Tennyson Ward Nicol Johnstone encouraged residents to make the most of this offer.
“If you can get to Willawong with any of your extra vegetation, then please do,” she said.
