#AceNewsDesk – The moment a mother chimpanzee is reunited with her newborn shows how alike we are, according to an expert on the species.

Chimpanzee Mahale gave birth to a baby boy, named Kucheza, at Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita, Kansas, via caesarean last week.

But her baby was not breathing well on his own, and the pair were separated, according to the zoo’s post on social media. 

Two days later, the zoo captured her returning to her enclosure and finding her baby there, swaddled in a blue blanket.

Natasha Coutts from the Jane Goodall Institute Australia said the moment she realises he is there, “she knows exactly what to do, her maternal instinct kicks in”.

She said it shows “just how similar they are to us”

“You can see in the video straight away as soon as she realises that her infant is there she’s straight to it, she embraces it, and the nature of that embrace is so similar to what a human mother would do when she’s reunited with her child,” she said: Chimps are rarely out of their mother’s sight until about five years old, and usually stay by her for another 10 years after that, Ms Coutts said.

From about 15, they become more independent, she said.

“When they do come back into contact, sometimes you have a helicopter mum and she’s been worried and she’ll embrace them and see if they’re ok, some mothers have different parenting approaches and they’ll be more chill.”

Kucheza, pronounced koo-CHAY-zuh means “play” in Swahili.

“Mahale is the most amazing mama,” the zoo wrote in a post. 

” She hasn’t put baby down since she first picked him up yesterday (Friday) morning and the two are in love.”

In another update, the zoon said Mahale and Kucheza “have reminded us all that chimpanzees are smart, charismatic, and amazing animals”
