Thousands of ibises have nested beside the M1 around Yatala and Beenleigh, with dozens being struck by passing vehicles daily.

Gold Coast resident Jess Saunders drives that section of road six days a week.

“It is an absolute shambles,” she said.

“I’ve witnessed several near-miss accidents when people have slammed on brakes suddenly or swerved to avoid having an ibis hit their car.

“I myself have had three near misses of actually hitting them … someone will be seriously injured soon.”

Environmental consultant Phil Shaw has helped manage the Gold Coast’s ibis populations for 26 years.

He said it was the most problematic year he had seen.

“They’re smarter than we give them credit for,” Mr Shaw said.

“They’ve worked out that if they can find a spot that’s really difficult for people to manage their nesting, they’ll find that and prefer that to set up their nests.”

Too late to take action

Mr Shaw said removing eggs from breeding colonies was a tried and tested population control method, but next to the M1 many eggs had already hatched.

“It’s really late in the breeding season to start doing something now, there are a lot of chicks in the nests,” he said. Mr Shaw says chicks are already hatching beside the M1.(Supplied: Phil Shaw)none

“That’s the problem. We’ve got so many chicks next to the M1, it’s a very tricky situation to manage now.”

The responsibility falls on the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

A spokesperson from the department said they recognised the Australian white ibis as a native bird, protected under the Nature Conservation Act 1992.

“Our environmental officers are working on proposals to address the issue of nests beside the M1 and safety concerns for passing motorists,” they said.

“It is a sensitive balancing act.”

The spokesperson said specialist ecology contractors were monitoring nesting areas and undertaking appropriate population and colony management strategies.

“We are aware of concerned locals requesting the removal of the ibis colony, and those seeking assurance the native species is being appropriately protected,” the spokesperson said.

Mr Shaw suggested trying again next season.

“It really would be advisable to potentially just mitigate the situation at the moment and wait for the end of the breeding season and get in front of the population at the start of the next breeding season,” he said.Phil Shaw says the birds feed on food scraps at landfill sites.(Supplied: Phil Shaw)none

Why the increase?

Mr Shaw said the hard-to-reach location of nests and access to food scraps were contributing to the breeding boom.

“The reason that they’re breeding is because we supply them with food at the landfill,” he said.

“If we could compost or separate out food waste at the bin stage, we could stop the amount of food that gets into the population and therefore fuels the breeding cycle.”
