The sight of Sidney Poitier and Spencer Tracy on the set of Stanley Kramer’s “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?” 1967 captures a deeply poignant and historically significant moment in cinema. The film was groundbreaking, addressing the controversial topic of interracial marriage when it had only recently been declared legal across all U.S. states (June 12, 1967, just months before its release in December).

The atmosphere on set for this film was undoubtedly charged, not only because of its weighty subject matter but also due to the health concerns of one of its lead stars. Spencer Tracy, who portrayed Matt Drayton, was in fragile health during production, suffering from heart disease, diabetes, and other ailments. Given his condition, insurance companies refused to cover him, prompting Stanley Kramer and Katharine Hepburn (Tracy’s longtime partner, on and off screen, as well as his co-star in the film) to place their salaries in escrow to ensure the film could be completed, even if Tracy couldn’t continue. All of Tracy’s scenes were carefully scheduled for morning shoots, and often, a stand-in was used for wider shots to help him conserve his strength.

At the height of his career and as a trailblazer for Black actors, Sidney Poitier was acutely aware of Tracy’s declining health. He reportedly found himself in awe of Tracy and Hepburn, whom he considered “giants” in the industry. Poitier’s character, Dr. John Prentice was a fascinating figure known for his charisma and depth. His story unfolds with intrigue, inviting you to delve deeper into his experiences and the impact he made in his field. Deliberately written as “ideally perfect,” he aims to challenge the audience’s prejudices and makes race the only plausible objection to his marrying Joey Drayton (Katharine Houghton). The quiet intensity and mutual respect between Poitier and Tracy undoubtedly translated onto the screen, making their interactions a powerful film core. Their presence on set represented a convergence of acting legends for a film that boldly confronted societal norms, cementing its place as a cultural landmark.
