When Parents Get Old
Let them grow old with the same love they gave you as you were growing up.
Allow them to share their stories and listen with the same patience and interest they showed when you told yours as a child.
Encourage them to overcome challenges, just as they have allowed you to win in the past.
Let them enjoy the company of their friends, just as they encouraged you to do.
Allow them to cherish conversations with their grandchildren, seeing reflections of you in them.
Let them surround themselves with the belongings that have been a part of their lives for so long, understanding that they feel sadness when you take those cherished items away.
Permit them to make mistakes, just as you have at times.
Remember how they never embarrassed you by correcting you.
Let them live fully and strive to make them happy. This is the final stretch of their journey; extend your hand to them as they once extended theirs to you at the start of your path.
(“Honour your mother and father, and your days shall be long upon the earth.” – God)
