Retired US astronaut Buzz Aldrin, one of the first two people to walk on the Moon in 1969, has married for a fourth time, announcing the news on his 93rd birthday.

Aldrin shared the news on Twitter, with photos of him and his bride, Anca Faur.

Dr Faur, 63, is a project manager at a science and chemical company.

In a tweet, Mr Aldrin said he and Dr Faur “are as excited as eloping teenagers” after becoming husband and wife in a “small private ceremony in Los Angeles”.

“On my 93rd birthday & the day I will be honoured by Living Legends of Aviation I am pleased to announce that my longtime love Dr Anca Faur & I have tied the knot,” he tweeted.

The first marriage of New Jersey-born Aldrin — to Joan Archer when he was 24 years old in 1954 — lasted 20 years and produced three children.

He remarried in December 1975 to Beverly Van Zile before divorcing less than three years later.

But his longest marriage — from 1988 to 2012 — was to Lois Driggs Cannon, but ended with an expensive divorce settlement a decade ago.

It reportedly cost Mr Aldrin an initial payout of $US240,000 ($345,000) followed by monthly payments of $US9,500 ($13,630) and a 30 per cent share of his future income.

As the Lunar Module Eagle pilot on Apollo 11, Aldrin and Neil Armstrong — the Apollo 11 mission commander — were the first two people to land on the Moon on July 21, 1969.

While Armstrong walked on the Moon first, Aldrin — a Presbyterian elder — became the first person to hold a religious ceremony when he privately took communion.

After his nuptials, Aldrin was flooded with messages of congratulations on social media, with some users incorporating humour in their well wishes.

One user said the couple were “keeping in each others’ orbit”, another described Aldrin as “forever young”, while radio host Tom Harrington said he imagined the former astronaut was “over the moon” in happiness.
