#AceBreakingNews – A Las Vegas-area public official has been arrested over the fatal stabbing of a journalist who reported extensively upon accusations of turmoil inside his office.

Clark County public administrator Robert Telles was taken into custody at his home by a police SWAT unit on Wednesday.

The arrest followed investigators serving a search warrant and confiscating vehicles at Mr Telles’s house in the criminal probe of the killing of Las Vegas Review-Journal reporter Jeff German.

Mr German’s body was found outside his home on Saturday morning.

The Clark County coroner ruled that Mr German died of “multiple sharp force injuries” and ruled the case a homicide.

Mr Telles had been a focus of Mr German’s reporting about turmoil including complaints of administrative bullying, favouritism and Mr Telles’s relationship with a subordinate staffer in the office that handles property of people who die without a will or family contacts.

The newspaper’s executive editor Glenn Cook said the arrest was “at once an enormous relief and an outrage” for the newsroom.

“We are relieved Robert Telles is in custody and outraged that a colleague appears to have been killed for reporting on an elected official,” Cook said.

Mr Telles did not respond on Wednesday to telephone messages at his county office, and it was not clear following his arrest if he had an attorney who could speak on his behalf.

Mr German joined the newspaper in 2010 after more than two decades at the Las Vegas Sun, where he was a columnist and reporter covering courts, politics, government and organised crime.

Mr Telles won his elected position in 2018, replacing a three-term public administrator.

He lost his June party primary to assistant public administrator Rita Reid and his term expires on December 31.

In the weeks before the election, Mr German reported about an office “mired in turmoil and internal dissension” between longtime employees and new hires under Mr Telles’s leadership.

Mr Telles blamed “old-timers” for exaggerating the extent of his relationship with a female staffer and falsely claiming that he mistreated them.

“All my new employees are super happy and everyone’s productive and doing well,” he told the newspaper.

Mr Telles later posted on Twitter complaints about Mr German, the newspaper reported, including claims in June that Mr German was a bully who was “obsessed” with him.

Mr German was working on follow-up reports, according to the newspaper, and he recently filed public records requests for emails and text messages between Mr Telles and three other county officials.

Michael Murphy, the former Clark County coroner hired to address complaints about leadership in the public administrators’ office, did not immediately respond to a telephone message.

After police appealed to the public on Monday for help to identify a suspect, developments came quickly.

Police on Tuesday showed a brief video of a possible suspect walking on a sidewalk clad in bright orange “construction attire”.

A photo of a red or maroon GMC Yukon Denali SUV with chrome handles, a sunroof and a luggage rack was distributed by police, who said it may have been linked to the case.

Mr Telles was seen in newspaper photos washing a similar vehicle parked in his driveway on Tuesday, and KTNV-TV reported the vehicle was towed away after police arrived on Wednesday.
