Anyone who uses a illegally modified Amazon Fire TV Stick has been warned that the police may be knocking at their door. The devices allow the owner to stream TV shows and films that they haven’t paid for.

This is a small device can be hacked to unlock hundreds of premium channels, subscription services, the latest films, and live Premier League football. Unlike legitimate Amazon Fire TV Sticks – these ones have been tampered with or cloned by crooks.

While the authorities are targeting criminal gangs who distribute dodgy fire sticks including in police raids, they are also making lists of those who are using the devices illegally. And officers may be knocking on the doors of those responsible.

Cyber experts also warn that passwords and internet connection could be compromised if you own a fake fire stick, ThisIsMoney reports.

The fake devices allow the user to access all the channels and streaming networks without paying for subscriptions – the cost of which has steadily risen over the years. Hacked fire sticks can look much the same as legal sticks but the software inside is used to crack the ‘licence key’ that does the pirating.

Users can tell if a device has been corrupted because they do not have to enter a password when opening different streaming applications such as Netflix or Amazon Prime. This means they don’t have to pay to access any of the content.

People can buy these dodgy devices for as little as £30. Anyone who does so has been warned they may be financing other illegal activities.

Detective Inspector Steve Payne, from the Bedford-based Eastern Region Special Operations Unit of the police, which led the investigation, says people have already been arrested. He added: “We have also gained access to the details of those purchasing the streams and I would remind anyone doing so that they will be breaking the law and could ultimately be subject to criminal proceedings.

“The two arrests made last week are part of an investigation into a sophisticated large-scale criminal operation that has generated significant sums through the illicit sale of TV subscription packages. Money generated through illegal means such as this often funds wider organised criminality.”
