#AceBreakingNews – Flash floods hit Italy, at least ten dead, survivors rescued from rooftops and trees

Dozens of survivors scrambled onto rooftops or up into trees to await rescue as flash floods swept through several towns in hilly central Italy after hours of heavy rain.

“It wasn’t a water bomb, it was a tsunami,” Riccardo Pasqualini, the mayor of Barbara, told Italian state radio about the sudden downpour that devastated his town in the Marche region near the Adriatic Sea.

A mother and her young daughter were missing after trying to escape the floods, Mr Pasqualini told an Italian news agency. Elsewhere in town, a boy was swept away from the arms of his mother, who was rescued.

Mr Pasqualini said the overnight flooding left the town’s 1,300 residents without drinking water.

In  the village of Cantiano, residents were clearing mud from the streets after torrents swept through several towns leaving a trail of damaged cars. 

‘Like an earthquake’

Around 400 millimetres of rain fell within two to three hours, the civil protection agency said — a third of the amount usually received in a year.

“It was an extreme event, more than an exceptional one,″ climatologist Massimiliano Fazzini told Italian state TV.

Based on his calculations, he said the amount of rain that fell, concentrated over four hours, was the most in hundreds of years.

Footage released by fire brigades showed rescuers on rafts trying to evacuate people in the seaside town of Senigallia.

With Italy’s national elections a little more than a week away, the deadly flooding has put climate change back onto the political agenda.

Paola Pino d’Astore, an expert at the Italian Society of Environmental Geology (SIGEA), said the floods were due to climate change and were not easy to predict.

Some 300 firefighters are currently operating in the area and have rescued dozens of people who had climbed onto roofs and into trees overnight to escape the floods.

Stefano Aguzzi, head of civil protection at Marche’s regional government, said the downpour was far stronger than had been forecast.
