AceBreakingNews – Ecuadorian presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio has been fatally shot after deciding not to suspend campaigning amid political violence in Ecuador.

Local media reported Mr Villavicencio, a former politician who had been polling at 7.5 per cent voting intention, was shot at a campaign event in Quito.

Mr Villavicencio’s party Movimiento Construye said on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, that armed men had attacked its Quito offices in a separate incident.

The party said discussions had been held recently about whether to suspend campaigning due to political violence flaring up in Ecuador, including the July murder of the mayor of Manta.

It said Mr Villavicencio opposed the suspension, arguing: “Keeping silent and hiding in moments when criminals assassin citizens and authorities is an act of cowardice.”

Meanwhile, a suspect in the killing had died from injuries sustained during a shootout, the attorney-general’s office said on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

“A suspect, who was injured during the shootout with security personnel, was apprehended and moved, badly injured, to the [attorney-general’s] unit in Quito,” the attorney-general’s office said.

“An ambulance from the fire department confirmed his death, the police are proceeding with collection of the cadaver.”

Mr Lasso pointed the finger at organised crime in the immediate aftermath of the event.

“For his memory and his fight, I assure you that this crime will not remain unpunished,” Mr Lasso said on X.

Mr Lasso said he would host top security officials at an urgent meeting.

Videos on social media purportedly from the campaign event showed people taking cover and screaming as gunfire sounded.

Mr Villavicencio was the candidate for the Build Ecuador Movement.

The 59-year-old was an outspoken critic of corruption, especially during the government of former president Rafael Correa from 2007 to 2017.

He filed many judicial complaints against high-ranking members of the Correa government.

He is survived by his wife and five children.

Patricio Zuquilanda, Mr Villavicencio’s campaign adviser, told the Associated Press the candidate had received death threats before the shooting, which he had reported to authorities.

He called on international authorities to take action against the violence, attributing it to rising violence and drug trafficking.

“The Ecuadorian people are crying and Ecuador is mortally wounded,” he said.

“Politics cannot lead to the death of any member of society.”
