#AceBreakingNews UPDATE: Papua New Guinea #earthquake kills at least seven it hit about 67 kilometres east of Kainantu and 80km north-west of Lae, in the eastern Papua New Guinea region, at about 9:45am on Sunday.

It was felt about 500km away in the capital of Port Moresby: Significant damage to buildings and roads and landslides were reported in Morobe, Eastern Highlands and Madang provinces, Commissioner of Police David Manning said in a statement.

“Sadly, seven people have been confirmed dead as a result of these landslides. Three in Kabwum District and three in Wau Town, Morobe Province, and one in Rai Coast, Madang Province,” he said on Monday.

Local journalist Scott Waide, who lives in Lae, described the earthquake as “very violent and unusual”.

“We have earthquakes that usually last 30 seconds to a minute and then they go away, but this one began and then it shook and became very violent,” he told ABC’s Pacific Beat program.

“On the ground, it felt like you were standing on waves… it was unnerving.”

He said there has been considerable damage to a nearby high school and university, but they were still not sure about injuries to students. Debris litters the floor of a home after the earthquake in north-eastern PNG.

Lae resident Emmanuel Ghainao said a falling stone hit a child in Morobe Province.

“Stones and ground started falling down on us and we ran to safety. But one stone hit one of the children and took her down the side of the hill,” he said.

Mr Gahanao told the ABC the girl received medical treatment after the stone crushed her foot.

Earthquakes are common in the country which sits on the Pacific Ocean’s “Ring of Fire”, a hotspot for seismic activity due to friction between tectonic plates.

A National Command Centre has been established by the government, and a COVID-19 hotline has been repurposed for the public to offer information on earthquake damage.A girl is recovering at Boanoa health centre after her foot was crushed by a rock. (Supplied: Emmanuel Gahanao)none

In Eastern Highlands province, there was damage to the University of Goroka and reports of injuries to students, Mr Manning said.

Engineers are assessing damage to the Yonki Dam that has caused power outages.

In Madang province, there were multiple injuries as buildings and houses were damaged, and one death was reported on the Rai Coast, he said.

He warned of a significant risk of aftershocks.

Waide said when a magnitude 7.5 earthquake rocked PNG’s remote mountainous highlands in 2018, the deaths were mostly confined to very isolated villages.

“We don’t have a clear picture of the death toll yet,” he said of the latest event.

“The remoteness of locations has always been a big, big problem for us and getting people into those locations.”

More than 100 people were killed in the 2018 quake and thousands of homes were damaged. A man shows a crack on the ground left by the earthquake.

The regional power grid, internet cables, and the regional highway were damaged but the airport remained operational.

Some of the injured were airlifted for immediate treatment.

Papua New Guinea residents shared images and videos on social media of cracked roads, damaged buildings and cars, and items falling off supermarket shelves.

Prime Minister James Marape addressed the nation on Sunday, saying help was on the way.

“Please bear with us, we’re taking stock of what is happening,” he said.

“[From] tomorrow onwards, we will deploy full assessment in the impact areas for government to start giving assistance where we can.”

The UN said people were injured by falling structures and debris, and there was damage to some health centres, homes, rural roads and highways.

State-backed communications provider PNG DataCo also reported its undersea cable network had been affected, suffering widespread disruptions.Cracks appear across a highway following a landslide near the town of Kainantu.(AP: Renagi Ravu)none

The US tsunami warning system issued an alert after the earthquake but later reported the danger had passed.

There was no immediate threat to Australia, the Bureau of Meteorology said.
