How did your area vote in the Voice referendum?(ABC News: Emma Machan)none

Australia has voted No to enshrining an Indigenous Voice to Parliament in the constitution, with at least four states projected to have rejected the proposal along with the total national vote.

But the vote hasn’t been uniform across states and cities. A small number of electorates, mainly in inner cities, are projected to have voted Yes.

These maps show those differences, revealing how disparate communities feel about this referendum question.

The ballots are still being counted and this story will update as votes continue to be reported.

Sydney

It was clear after just an hour of counting that New South Wales had voted No.

But the map of Sydney has shown a fascinating divide. Inner city electorates, particularly those in the eastern suburbs and north shore, are voting Yes.

That includes the former Liberal seats that were won by teal independents at the 2022 election.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s own electorate of Grayndler has also voted overwhelmingly in favour of the Voice.

For the full state result, see the national map below.

Melbourne

Victoria is also projected to vote No and we’re seeing the same pattern in Melbourne that we’ve seen in Sydney.

Inner city areas are leaning Yes, while the outer suburbs are voting No.

Seats with strong Yes votes include the Greens leader Adam Bandt’s seat of Melbourne, and the seats of Kooyong and Goldstein, both held by teal independents.

Brisbane and South-East Queensland

Relatively few electorates in South-East Queensland have voted Yes.

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton’s seat of Dickson, in outer northern Brisbane, has voted No.

Adelaide

South Australia was the third state to be called with a No result, meaning a double majority was now impossible in the referendum.

Perth

Polls in Western Australia closed hours after those on the east coast, meaning the results take a little longer. While the state is projected to vote No, there are some pockets of Yes around Perth and Fremantle.

Tasmania

In Tasmania, Hobart has voted Yes but it wasn’t enough to make up for a firmer No in the rest of the state.

Northern Territory

It’s tricky to visually map the Northern Territory, which only has two electorates: Solomon which takes in the capital Darwin and its surrounding areas and Lingiari which covers a huge area spanning the rest of the territory. Both voted No.

To see the break down in Solomon, zoom in.

Australian Capital Territory

So far, the ACT is the only jurisdiction in Australia to have voted for the Voice.

All of Australia
