#AceWeatherDesk – Power has been restored to thousands of Victorian homes after storms and heavy rain swept across parts of the state, bringing down trees and damaging properties.

Benalla was hit by a storm that one resident described as “chaos”.

The storms started in Gippsland in the state’s east and intensified over the north-west.

At Falls Creek, in the state’s alpine region, just under 20 millimetres of rain fell in the space of an hour overnight.

In Benalla, near Wangaratta, the Bureau of Meteorology recorded 18mm of rain in just 15 minutes.

The fast-moving storm brought down trees, with the State Emergency Service (SES) receiving dozens of calls for help.

The local Benalla unit said it was working through a large number of jobs after the area “suffered some significant storm damage”.

Benalla resident Nikita Gambrell said the storm was “unlike anything”.

“The sheer force of it, watching the trees bend to the ground,” she said.

She said she was in a car as the storm intensified and described “chaos” and “noise” on the drive home.

Power companies have been working to restore electricity to thousands of homes across the state, with nearly 5,000 properties without power at the peak of the outage.

More than 3,000 properties, mostly in the east, remained without power by 9am. About half of those were in Benalla, which has a population of about 10,000.

Bureau senior meteorologist Christie Johnson said north-eastern parts of the state could be hit by more storms.

“As that trough lingers, that cool change that moved through yesterday is going to linger around the north-east of the state today,” she said on Sunday morning.

“The good news is that most of the thunderstorm activity is likely to be up around the high country, and particularly around the far eastern ranges.”

Despite the storms bringing cooler temperatures to some parts of the state, severe heatwave conditions are still affecting northern areas.

Wodonga and Wangaratta were forecast to reach 36 degrees Celsius on Sunday.

After the mercury hit 37C in Melbourne on Saturday, a top of just 21C was forecast for Sunday.

But it will only be a temporary reprieve, with 30C forecast for Melbourne on Monday and 37C predicted for Tuesday. The roof of a church in Benalla was ripped off in the storm.(Supplied)none
