#AceBreakingNews – Robertson, the small New South Wales village that is home to film stars such as Miriam Margolyes and the movie Babe, has had its biggest win yet.
The town’s Big Potato has officially been named Australia’s Sh*ttest Big Thing: The competition, run by the comedy site ‘Sh** Towns of Australia’, saw stiff competition in the finals from Queensland’s Nazi-saluting Captain Cook and Victoria’s Big Koala.
The large icon was described by competition organisers as “looking like it’s been up for three days straight”.
In the end, it was down to Kalgoorlie’s “World’s Tallest Bin” and the Big Potato, with the Spud coming up trumps with the popular vote.
Win shines spotlight on village
So, will the win translate to hordes of new visitors coming to town, or a mass exodus?
Geoff Rissole, one of the founders of ‘Sh** Town of Australia’, reckons it might be the start of a boom for the Southern Highlands town.
“Early on we used to get complaints from towns we wrote about, but now we get contacted if they haven’t been featured,” he said.
“You could use the list of sh** big things to have a very funny tour of Australia.”
Potato’s owners humbled by accolade
Sarah Tait’s parents own the land the potato sits on, which Sarah reckons makes her the Potato Princess.
“Look, as the Princess, I’ve gone to see other Big Things to compare and contrast,” she said.
“I reckon this will bring plenty of people to Robbo. Just wait till it stops raining. Everyone’s getting bogged.”
Instead of installing a plaque, Potato Princess Sarah says she’ll celebrate by eating potatoes in several different ways, including gratin, mash and rosti.
“And perhaps some vodka.”
