#AceBreakingNews – A man has been shot by police and an officer stabbed in the face in a “major incident” at an apartment in Brisbane’s inner south: Officers went to the property at River Terrace in Kangaroo Point just after 11:00am to execute a search warrant.

Detective Superintendent Andrew Massingham said after entering the property, four officers were confronted by a man from another unit.

“That [man] has entered … the unit and stabbed one of our officers in the chin with a 20-centimetre serrated knife,” Detective Superintendent Massingham said.

“That offender has then left that unit, he’s been confronted by police … he’s been warned, he’s failed to comply with officers’ directions to drop that weapon.”

He said the 38-year-old man was then shot in the abdomen by a junior officer.

“My understanding is that a taser at some point was deployed to try and stop any additional threat against those officers but unfortunately, once again, we have a situation where an officer had to use lethal force to stop the threat,” Detective Superintendent Massingham said.

“The offender immediately fell to the ground, was disarmed and first aid was applied immediately.”

The man was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical but stable condition. He is undergoing surgery.

Police union president Ian Leavers said it was the stabbed officer who rendered first aid to the man.

“After our colleague was stabbed today, the first thing he did when control was taken was render immediate aid to save this person’s life,” he said.

“That just shows you that police put their own lives on the line, but will do all they possibly can to preserve life, even if someone has tried to kill them.

“We are very fortunate we do not have murdered police today that we are reporting about.

“Our support is with them. They were simply out there doing their job and it just shows the unpredictable nature of police work and how things can change in an instant.”

Officer being treated for non-life-threatening injuries

The male senior constable in his 40s who was injured was taken to the Mater Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He was released later in the afternoon.

“He is deeply shocked by what’s occurred,” Detective Superintendent Massingham said.

“Again, tragically, we’ve witnessed an incident involving our frontline police that is tragic and confronting.”

A crime scene has been declared, and River Terrace between Bell Street and Llewellyn Street will be closed for some time.

The Ethical Standards Command has launched a critical incident investigation into the police response with oversight by the Crime and Corruption Commission.

It is the third police shooting in less than three weeks, after two men were shot in separate incidents in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast, on the same day last month.
