A magnitude 3.2 earthquake has been recorded near Crookwell in the New South Wales Southern Tablelands.

Geoscience Australia said the quake occurred just before 2am at a depth of one kilometre.

Crookwell resident Richard Brown said he could “feel the shake in the walls”.

“When I got up this morning the fan in the bathroom had come out of the ceiling and is now hanging by a wire,” he said.

“It was only a small one, shook the leaves out of the trees.”

Lyn Diskon from nearby Boorowa said she was awoken by the quake this morning.

“I thought it was a really long roll of thunder, my dogs looked straight at me and sprang into bed,” she said.

“They’re keeping very close now.”

Steve Oxley said it sounded like a storm.

“I didn’t realise it was an earthquake, but there was a really long [sound of] thunder and banging,” he said.

“It went on for a long time — a good 10 or 12 seconds.

“I thought it was a storm until I heard this morning.

“It was the noise — I didn’t feel the shake because I was lying in bed.”

There have been no reports of damage or injuries as a result of the quake.

Fifth quake in a month

Geoscience Australia seismologist Jonathan Griffin said tremors were common in the Southern Tablelands.

“That region has had quite a few smaller to moderate earthquakes in the last 10 years — we have had over 200 in the Crookwell-Boorowa region,” he said.

“They are not uncommon in this area, but obviously compared to other parts of the world they are small to moderate in magnitude.”

Mr Griffin said the region was located on the Indo-Australia tectonic plate.

“We get earthquakes in Australia because we are in the middle fo a tectonic plate, which is being compressed,” he said.

“There are weaknesses in the crust and as it is squeezed sometimes the stresses get released along those weaknesses.

“So some parts of Australia get more than others and this region is one of those.”

A magnitude 4 quake hit the region last November and this morning’s tremor is the fifth recorded in NSW this month.

A 3.1 magnitude earthquake was recorded at Appin just before 6am on June 19 and was followed by a smaller tremor at about 8:30 that night.

A magnitude 3 quake was recorded near Grafton on June 7 and a 2.4 magnitude earthquake was felt near Boorowa on June 4.
