#AceBreakingNews Court Report: A Great Southern man who sexually abused a girl over six years will spend at least 10 years behind bars: The 41-year-old man pleaded guilty to 26 charges including sexual penetration without consent, indecent dealing and indecent recording in Albany District Court on Monday.

The court heard the man abused the girl, the daughter of his former partner, from December 2014 to March last year.

The ABC has chosen not to name the man to avoid identifying the victim.

Judge Mark Edward Herron said the man groomed the girl to meet his “depraved sexual demands”.

The court heard that between December 2014 and March 2021, the man consistently sexually assaulted the child, beginning when the victim was aged seven and the offender was aged 34.

The incidents began when the offender and the victim’s mother were in a relationship, escalating significantly when the relationship broke down.

Once the relationship ended, the man, who was considered a step-father figure to the victim, maintained a close relationship with the mother.

The victim would regularly sleep overnight at the offender’s house while her mother worked night shifts.

From the age of seven, the offender groomed the victim, using his position of power and trust to sexually abuse and physiologically manipulate her.

The victim’s mother reported the crimes to police after her daughter told her about the abuse in March last year.

The court heard the victim has since attempted suicide multiple times. 

Her mother told the court she had trusted the man to enter their home.

“He’s broken not only her body, but her mind,” she said.

“The impact on my family has been devastating.”

Judge slams man’s behaviour

Justice Herron said he had reservations about the man’s remorse.

“It was your responsibility, your duty to protect her … you used her as your plaything,” he said.

“You forced and required [the victim] to comply with your depraved sexual demands.”

The man was sentenced to 12 years in prison and will be eligible for parole after 10 years.
