Election 2022: The polls have closed in Western Australia, ending voting in the 2022 federal election, with the state’s polling booths the last in the country to shut: With early national trends indicating a close race and a potentially hung Parliament, WA seats could be crucial to either side’s chances of forming government……….Early results from WA are expected to come through over the next hour.
Currently 10 of the 15 federal electorates in WA are held by the Liberal Party, and the remaining five are Labor.
The Liberal-held seat of Stirling has been abolished since the 2019 election, reducing the number of WA seats down to 15……………..The most marginal of these is Cowan in Perth’s south-east, held by Labor’s Ann Aly by a slim 0.9 per cent.
Labor has been optimistic of not just holding Cowan but also picking up the seats of Pearce and Swan, after the retirement of Liberal Party heavyweights Christian Porter and Steve Irons…………..It also believes it’s in with a chance in Hasluck, held by indigenous Affairs Minister Ken Wyatt.
Curtin result set to be close
But one of the most interesting battles is shaping up in the affluent western suburbs seat of Curtin, long a Liberal stronghold and held by Celia Hammond for the past three years since the retirement of former Defence Minister Julie Bishop…………………Despite holding the seat on what would previously considered a very safe margin of almost 14 per cent, Ms Hammond, the former vice chancellor of Notre Dame University, is under considerable threat from so-called “teal” independent Kate Chaney.
Ms Chaney, a former corporate lawyer and strategy director at charity Anglicare, has been campaigning for more action on climate change, political accountability and women’s issues, and polls have shown her neck-and-neck with Ms Hammond in the blue-ribbon seat……………..The significance of the west to the national vote has not been lost on the leaders of the two major parties either…………Labor launched its campaign in Perth for the first time since 1940 and Prime Minister Scott Morrison dashed across to WA for the last day of his political campaign in a final bid to win over the voters of Swan, Pearce, Hasluck and Cowan.
