The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) says storms are set to continue along the entire Australian east coast through to Boxing Day.

The BOM the Queensland storm brought large hail down upon Dayboro and Burpengary, north of Brisbane.

Gatton, west of Ipswich, was battered by severe conditions again for a second time, after reports of hail up to eight centimetres during the previous night.

Energex has recorded about 151,000 lightning strikes across south-east Queensland in two hours.

By 1:30pm, more than 57,500 properties were without power across the south east, from Moreton Bay to the Gold Coast and further inland from Somerset to the Scenic Rim.

A storm cell stretching from the Darling Downs to northern New South Wales brought bringing heavy rain, strong winds and hail.

Heavy rain engulfed parts of the Warrego Highway from Marburg to Toowoomba and the system engulfed Redcliffe, Brisbane, Logan and parts of the Gold Coast as it neared the coast.

BOM senior forecaster Felim Hanniffy said the most intense storm activity stretched from Moreton Bay to the Lockyer Valley, west of Brisbane.

“We did get reports of up to 8-centimetre hail in Dayboro,” he said.Loading…

“We had some very intense rainfall totals, in fact Wivenhoe Dam picked up 58 millimetres in just 30 minutes and 45mm of that fell in just 15 minutes.”

Mr Hanniffy said Gatton, west of Ipswich, saw giant hail in excess of 10 centimetres overnight.

“That is rare and certainly unusual but not unprecedented,” he said.

“We saw bigger hail even back in October last year around parts of the central coast.”

Storms from Queensland to Victoria

Mr Hanniffy said significant storms would continue all along Australia’s east coast through to Boxing Day.

“That means the risk of giant hail, destructive wind gusts and intense rainfall and it’s all being driven by a really significant weather system,” he said.

“That’s going to affect multiple states, so Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria, and is linked to a developing low pressure system that’s going to spin up over parts of Victoria and southern New South Wales and then slowly move east and eventually off the coast during about Tuesday.

“That includes the high demographic areas of Newcastle, Sydney, and even Canberra, as well as down to Victoria and Melbourne.”

In New South Wales, the State Emergency Service (SES) warned travellers to be cautious of “widespread unsettled weather”.

On Sunday afternoon there was a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of Victoria’s Central and Mallee districts, including Horsham and Warracknabeal.

Severe storms were also expected to develop in the west of the state and in the Macedon ranges.
