The 331 Chrysler Hemi was the first of Chrysler’s legendary line of hemispherical combustion chamber V8 engines, introduced in 1951. Known as the “FirePower” V8, the 331 cubic inch (5.4L) Hemi featured a unique head design that improved airflow and combustion efficiency, resulting in better power and reliability compared to conventional wedge-head engines of the time. The hemispherical chamber allowed for larger valves and straighter airflow paths, which made the engine particularly well-suited to high-performance applications.

Initially producing 180 horsepower in passenger cars like the Chrysler New Yorker and Imperial, the 331 Hemi quickly gained a reputation for strength and was soon adapted for racing and high-performance use. Its success led to developing larger Hemi variants, including the 354 and the iconic 392. Today, the 331 Hemi is highly regarded by collectors and hot rodders alike for its historical significance and robust design, marking the beginning of Chrysler’s dominance in American V8 engine engineering.
