Albert Einstein

Albert Einstein was born on March 14, 1879, in Ulm, Württemberg, Germany. Six weeks after his birth, his family moved to Munich, where he began his education at the Luitpold Gymnasium. Later, they relocated to Italy, and Albert continued his studies in Aarau, Switzerland. In 1896, he enrolled at the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich to train as a teacher in physics and mathematics. He earned his diploma in 1901 and acquired Swiss citizenship that same year. Unable to find a teaching position, he took a job as a technical assistant at the Swiss Patent Office. In 1905, he obtained his doctorate.
While at the Patent Office, he produced much of his remarkable work during his spare hours. In 1908, he was appointed as a Privatdozent in Bern. The following year, in 1909, he became a Professor Extraordinary in Zurich, and in 1911, he was named Professor of Theoretical Physics in Prague. The following year, he returned to Zurich for a similar role. In 1914, he was appointed Director of the Kaiser Wilhelm Physical Institute and became a professor at the University of Berlin. That same year, he also became a German citizen. He remained in Berlin until 1933, when he renounced his citizenship for political reasons and emigrated to America to accept a position as a Professor of Theoretical Physics at Princeton. He became a United States citizen in 1940 and retired in 1945.
After World War II, Einstein became a prominent advocate for the World Government Movement. He was offered the presidency of the State of Israel but declined the position. Additionally, he collaborated with Dr. Chaim Weizmann to help establish the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
Einstein always appeared to have a clear view of the problems of physics and the determination to solve them. He had a strategy of his own and was able to visualize the main stages on the way to his goal. He regarded his major achievements as mere stepping-stones for the next advance.
At the beginning of his scientific career, Einstein recognised the limitations of Newtonian mechanics. His special theory of relativity emerged from his efforts to reconcile the laws of mechanics with those of the electromagnetic field. He addressed classical issues in statistical mechanics and explored their intersection with quantum theory, which led to his explanation of Brownian motion in molecules. Additionally, he investigated the thermal properties of light at low radiation densities, and his observations became foundational for the photon theory of light.
In his early days in Berlin, Einstein proposed that a correct understanding of the special theory of relativity should also provide a theory of gravitation. In 1916, he published his paper on the general theory of relativity. During this period, he also significantly contributed to radiation theory and statistical mechanics.
In the 1920s, Einstein began working on unified field theories while continuing his exploration of the probabilistic interpretation of quantum theory. After moving to America, he persisted in these efforts. He made significant contributions to statistical mechanics by developing the quantum theory of a monatomic gas. Additionally, he conducted valuable research related to atomic transition probabilities and relativistic cosmology.
After his retirement, he continued to work towards unifying the basic concepts of physics, taking the opposite approach of geometrization compared to most physicists.
Einstein’s research is well-documented, and some of his most significant works include the following: *Special Theory of Relativity* (1905), *Relativity* (English translations published in 1920 and 1950), *General Theory of Relativity* (1916), *Investigations on the Theory of Brownian Movement* (1926), and *The Evolution of Physics* (1938). Albert Einstein received honorary doctorate degrees in science, medicine, and philosophy from several universities in Europe and America. During the 1920s, he lectured across Europe, America, and the Far East, and he was awarded fellowships or memberships from many of the world’s leading scientific academies. He received numerous awards in recognition of his contributions to science, including the Copley Medal from the Royal Society of London in 1925 and the Franklin Medal from the Franklin Institute in 1935.
Einstein’s gifts inevitably resulted in his dwelling much in intellectual solitude, and for relaxation, music played an essential part in his life. He married Mileva Maric in 1903, and they had a daughter and two sons; their marriage was dissolved in 1919, and in the same year, he married his cousin, Elsa Löwenthal, who died in 1936.
