Sampson, later renamed Mammoth, was born in 1846 in Bedfordshire, England. He was a Shire horse, a breed famous for its size and strength. Sampson grew to an incredible 21.2 hands (about 7 feet 2 inches or 2.18 meters) and weighed a massive 3,360 pounds (1,524 kg), making him the most giant horse in recorded history.
Although Shire horses were known for their strength, Sampson’s fame stemmed primarily from his enormous size rather than feats of strength or speed. He became renowned in England due to his immense stature and gentle nature.
