A bomb cyclone off the NSW coast is bringing hazardous surf conditions, strong winds and heavy rain that threatens to cause flash flooding.

Train hits tree that fell on tracks in Sydney
Train services on the T1 line have been disrupted after a tree fell onto the tracks and the train collided with it.
It has impacted travel between St Marys and Penrith in both directions.
Adam Dewberry from Fire and Rescue NSW said that just before 6pm they received reports that a tree had fallen over on High Street, Penrith.
“I believe at the rear of a childcare centre and had gone across some railway tracks, and the train has collided with it, we’ve got a couple of firetrucks on scene,” he said.
Transport for NSW said they are organising replacement buses and have warned of delays.

30,000 without power, with over half in Central Coast: Ausgrid
Speaking on ABC Radio, Ausgrid’s group executive for safety, delivery & operations Sam Sofi gave an update on the number of outages across NSW.
He said there’s about 30,000 customers without power, with just over half being across the Central Coast and around 13,000 in the Newcastle area.
“In Sydney — not too bad at the moment, with only about 1,500 off,” Mr Sofi said.
What’s less clear is exactly when the power will come back on.
“Given the weather’s still continuing, and probably going to continue through the night, probably into the early hours of the morning, unfortunately, the customers are coming off faster than we can put them back on at present,” Mr Sofi said.
He added that power would likely remain off for those affected throughout Wednesday, with some being without power into the evening.

NSW SES upgrades weather warning for South Coast
The NSW SES has provided an updated weather warning for some parts of the wider South Coast region, issuing a Watch and Act warning for Jervis Bay, Ulladulla and Batemans Bay.
Residents have been advised to now stay indoors, due to heavy rainfall alongside destructive and damaging winds.
At the time of writing, there are 23 warnings issued by the state’s emergency service across the state, including four Emergency Warnings.

Lagoon mechanically opened for flood mitigation
A lagoon on the NSW south coast has been mechanically opened as a flood mitigation measure to protect low-lying properties.
Possible heavy rainfall and large seas are anticipated to cause a rise in levels at Lake Tabourie, south of Ulladulla.
More than 75 millimetres of rain has fallen in the Ulladulla region since 9am and the Bureau of Meteorology is warning up to 120mm could fallacross parts of the coast over the coming hours.
Hazardous surf conditions have already picked up with waves expected to be dangerous and powerful, reaching heights of 5 to 6 metres.The lagoon was opened mechanically on Tuesday. (ABC News)normal
Flood warnings potentially escalating tonight
Deputy Commissioner Platz said minor to moderate flooding could be on the horizon for the Hawkesbury, Nepean and Georges rivers, with the NSW SES closely monitoring the conditions.
“Those flood warnings could escalate tonight for some of the very low-lying areas,” she told the ABC.
“But again, it’s a dynamic system. So that’s why we need people in the community to really stay alert to what is happening in their area.”
Some resources to keep alert, Deputy Commissioner Platz said, include the NSW SES and BOM websites as well as the Hazards Near Me app.

More than 1,000 call-outs over 24 hours
NSW SES Deputy Commissioner Debbie Platz said the number of total event incidences is edging close to the 1,500 mark, since tracking of this low-pressure system began last week, with over 1,000 in the 24 hours to 4:30pm today.
Most of these were in preparation for this weather event, the deputy commissioner said, but some also include power outages, with about 9,000 people across the Central Coast being without power.
“And there are significant crashes reported on the road. In one instance, for example, there’s a tree that came down in the Lake Macquarie area, and that caused a four car accident,” she said.
“So it’s very dangerous conditions out along the east coast of New South Wales.”
Conditions are likely to worsen overnight for Sydney, Illawarra, and South Coast
Speaking on ABC this evening, NSW SES Deputy Commissioner Debbie Platz said that, currently, this weather system is moving both inland and southwards.
That means conditions will ease in the Mid North Coast, while they’ll worsen further overnight for Sydney as well as the Illawarra and South Coast regions.
“What we’re seeing already are trees and powerlines coming down in some parts of the Central Coast and Sydney.”

Sydney’s popular beachside suburb of Bondi was unusually quiet this afternoon, except for a few people braving the cold and the rain.
The ABC spoke to a couple of visitors from England who described the change in the weather as “crazy “.
“It’s very cold, I’ve just come from England where it’s actually hotter today than it is here, so it’s very surreal,” one said.
“I’ve got to say this is quite extreme even for me.”

‘Tough night’ on public transport
Howard Collins from Transport for NSW said they are anticipating a tough night for the state’s public transport network as the weather system intensifies.
On the water, fast ferries are still in operation but the service to Manly has been suspended due to heavy swells.
“There is so much going on. Please listen out for announcements, and the advice for people using our public transport and roads is you don’t have to travel, stay indoors,” he said.
“There may well be more disruption. So if you are planning to get home, leave early, take your time, don’t leave it until late in the evening because that’s when disruptions occur.”
Train service disruption after fallen tree
Buses are replacing trains in both direction on the Central Coast and Newcastle line after a tree fell on the overhead powerlines at Dora Creek.
Services have now been suspended between Fassifern and Wyong, Transport for NSW coordinator general Howard Collins said in an update on the state of public transport.
“We have already got some stand-by buses which have been standing by since yesterday,” he said.
Earlier in the day a tree also fell between Dapto and Kiama. That has now been cleared but commuters are warned to expect service delays.

Lord Howe Island’s power supply safe from strong winds

Despite intense winds being recorded across Lord Howe Island today, power interruption is a concern the storm-tossed residents don’t have to worry about.
On Tuesday morning, the Bureau of Meteorology logged wind speeds of 63 kilometres per hour on the island, alongside gusts of up to 82kmph.
While these wind speeds can certainly bring down trees and block roads, electricity is continuing to hum in homes across the island thanks to its underground power supply.
According to the Lord Howe Island Board, energy on the island is distributed using an underground electrical reticulation system, powered by three diesel units and servicing 296 customers.
Aaron Ralph, operator of dive shop Dive Lord Howe, said in the past when there were power poles, they were “constantly being knocked out by the plethora of vegetation that we have on Lord Howe Island”.
Emergency warnings issued on Central Coast

The NSW SES has issued several formal emergency warnings on the Central Coast, due to dangerous coastal erosion.
The warning areas as of Tuesday 4:30pm cover waterfront homes at Wamberal, and northern areas of The Entrance.
The SES says it is directing people in those areas to evacuate, due to dangerous waves resulting in significant damage, or risk of damage, to properties.
Volunteers have been doorknocking in the area across the day, to communicate with residents.

‘We live in fear every East Coast Low that is predicted’
On the NSW South Coast, Surfside resident Craig Lyttle is sandbagging parts of his home as the area braces for the impact of big seas.
“We live in fear every East Coast Low that is predicted,” he said.
“This one is going to be quite significant, and we live in fear of major damage to our houses along here in Surfside Beach.”

Mr Lyttle said a sand dune that was built to protect the Batemans Bay suburb when it was first developed has been “reduced to nothing”.
“We need a hard stand or a rock wall or something to protect our houses,” he said.
“We’ve sandbagged the back of the housethey are ones SES left here last time, and we’ve got them at the back of our house.”

Footage of waves crashing into sand
Wamberal resident Chris Rogers has sent this video to the ABC, showing the waves washing away the sand at Wamberal Beach.
It comes amid Central Coast Council’s protection works earlier this morning, given the concerns residents have of coastal erosion.
Jihad Dib, minister for emergency services, said locals should follow the instructions of SES and other key personnel during this time.
“I understand that the SES will actually be out doorknocking around the Wamberal area, we do have some concerns about there, particularly cause of the coastal erosion,” he said.

Central Coast residents advised to leave over coastal erosion threat

Residents of about a dozen homes on the Central Coast are being advised to leave their properties due to the threat of coastal erosion.
NSW SES crews are doorknocking some beachfront homes at Wamberal, east of Gosford, and also at The Entrance.
Wamberal has previously been hit hard by erosion — with high tides again hammering the shoreline.
Emergency Services Minister Jihad Dib urged earlier today that people across the state should heed any direction or advice given by the SES.
“We’ve got a high tide coming in later this evening, in addition, you throw in a bit of the rain and it might not be worth taking the risk [to stay]. The SES is onto that, and they’ll be working with the local community.”

Over 16,000 without power: Ausgrid
According to Ausgrid’s current power outages list, there are over 16,000 people experiencing unplanned outages today.
Those customers range across the supplier’s distribution area, which spans across parts of Sydney to the Central Coast and the Hunter Valley.
