#AceNewsDesk – Mobile phones and smart watches will be banned from all state schools, in a move to bring Queensland’s policy in line with the rest of the country.
Queensland’s Education Minister Grace Grace announced the ban after meeting with education ministers from around the country……………The ban will also include break times.
Currently, 95 per cent of state schools across Queensland have a “clear policy” banning the use of phones during class times, but the change will prohibit their use altogether.
For non-state schools, it will remain up to the discretion of the principal or school leaders to decide on and implement a phone use policy.
Until now, Queensland was the only state not to impose phone rules in state schools.
Earlier this year, Ms Grace appointed former Queensland Family and Child Commissioner Cheryl Vardon to carry out a review into the current phone-in-schools policy.Grace Grace says all mobile phones must be “away for the day” in state schools from next year.(ABC News: Lucas Hill)none
“I’ve met with Ms Vardon, and she has made clear recommendations to ban phones and certain wearable devices during school hours, and for an education campaign for families,” Ms Grace said.
Once the full report is handed to the government later this month, the department will work on an implementation plan.
Students will still be able to bring phones to school to contact parents or carers before or after hours.
The Queensland Teachers Union has welcomed the decision to ban the use of mobile phones in school hours.
Union vice president Leah Olsson said it will ensure more face-to-face socialisation for students during their breaks and will allow students to focus on their learning during class.
Ms Olsson said the roll-out will need to ensure that the health and wellbeing of students is prioritised, such as considering emergency situations.
“There are times when mobiles are used as education tools as well,” she said.
