On 2 July 1971, Evonne Goolagong won the Wimbledon tennis championship for the first time.
Goolagong is often described as one of the most incredible trailblazers of Australian Tennis, the Wiradjuri women who dominated the women’s game during the 1970s.
She was the first Indigenous Australian to win a singles grand slam and the first mother to win a major title in the modern era.
