Ten years ago 1 March 2013, on Stuart Highway south of Alice Springs Prison, I came across the first Wedge-tailed Eagle youngster I followed over time. I had already encountered and photographed her three times recently, in late February. This was the fourth.

Her parents had wound their way up, soaring high overhead, and left her behind in a tree by the road with a pair of crows. I only found her because she was still delightfully chatty. She flew off and around to come back and flutter above me as if saying, “See, I can fly too!’ … and she could fly beautifully, but not well enough to go soaring up high with her parents just yet.

Such a fantastic thing for her to do!

It was a funny white/grey day down the highway. This composite creative image of three photos represents how it was on the day.

I wonder how many people realise Wedge-tailed Eagle parents take their still naive youngsters out and about to carrion with them wherever it is and may leave them behind in trees by the road while they go high up soaring.

These youngsters have no idea the dangers vehicles on roads pose to them … sigh!
