Hi, I’m Anne Connolly.  

Getting tonight’s story to air was a real challenge. It took over a year to investigate and legal applications took us all the way to the Supreme Court to get bans lifted to allow people to talk. 

It involves people who, just like megastar Britney Spears, have lost total control of their lives.

Britney’s life and money ended up being taken over by her father but in Australia it’s frequently state government public trustees and guardians who take control when someone is found to no longer have capacity to make decisions. 

Over the years, I have received dozens of emails from people telling me how their loved ones had been put into nursing homes or group homes against their will. On top of that, they were being charged massive fees. 

I wanted to tell those stories, but the problem was, it’s a criminal offence for people “under orders”, or their family, to speak about it publicly. Our team of journalists also risked going to jail if we reported their stories. 

So, with the ABC’s backing, my colleagues and I went to the Supreme Court to fight for the right to give them a voice. We won.

This is the first time Australians can see for themselves the conditions under which these people live. We show how these state government agencies have taken extraordinary fees and mismanaged people’s finances, leaving them worse off than before. 

Some 50,000 Australians are currently under the control of such agencies. Tonight’s program shows how the system set-up to protect the vulnerable is in many cases doing the opposite.
