Thousands of New South Wales Police officers could soon be in for a massive pay rise, with the police union claiming some could receive up to 39 per cent more in their pay packet over the next four years.

The Police Association of NSW said the new pay offer would see all non-commissioned officers receive increases of between 22.3 per cent and 39.4 per cent over that period.

It said more than 10,000 officers would receive at least a 25 per cent pay rise if the offer was accepted by members.

“This offer exceeds any other police jurisdiction across the country,” association president Kevin Morton said in a video address to members.

“This offer will see the highest pay increases achieved in the last 30 years for NSW Police.

“This offer outstrips what we have seen accepted by other public sector agencies.”

The state government said the base offer, for non-commissioned officers, was 19 per cent over the next four years.

“To keep cops, you’ve got to pay them properly,” Police Minister Yasmin Catley said.

Ian Allwood, the association’s vice-president, said the union was floating the larger percentages because they also take into account allowances, as well as systemic changes which would see officers move faster through their pay scales.

“Response police officers, in the old system, it would take them 15 years to get to the top-level senior constable,” Mr Allwood said.

“We’ve compressed that pay scale down to 10 years.

“So, they get a 19 per cent basic pay rise. However, because of that compressed pay scale, in 10 years they’re at top-level senior constable.”

‘Need to retain more police’

Ms Catley said commissioned officers and inspectors would also receive a base pay rise of 13.5 per cent and 15 per cent respectively.

“We need to retain more police in New South Wales and we need to recruit more police in New South Wales,” she said.

“We inherited more than 1,000 police short when we came into government and, unfortunately, we are still bleeding police in this state.”

According to data collected by the ABC, there were more than 2,200 police officer vacancies in the NSW Police Force earlier this year.

“We made savings right across all areas, operationally and in support, and it’s that which is paying for the pay rise,” Ms Catley said.

Voting on the offer will start later this month.

If accepted, police would receive back-pay going back to July.

In its message to members, the association outlined what some officers could receive.

“By July 2027, a top-level senior constable who works a rotating roster will earn over $150,000 per annum plus 12 per cent superannuation,” Mr Morton said.

“A top-level sergeant who works a rotating roster after four years on rank will earn over $170,000 plus 12 per cent superannuation.”

The pay offer comes after reports of a “toxic” workplace culture within the NSW Police Force.

It also comes as nurses and midwives prepare to walk off the job on Wednesday over pay.

Rail, bus, and tram workers also threatened to strike over the same issue on Thursday.
