…special note…
The following words came with the Post…
I am a Kulin woman,
My great great great great grandmother was stolen from Port Phillip Bay with her mother and sister by the sealers in the very early 1800,s.
This is the oldest, most beautiful photo I have ever seen of women from our mob.
Two Kulin nation women of the Port Phillip region, Melbourne, 1847
The photographer, Kilburn, was apparently the first to set up a professional photographic studio in Melbourne and his images of Kulin nation people have been claimed to be the earliest surviving photographs of Aboriginal people anywhere in Australia.
Because of the novelty of photography at the time, Kilburn was thought of as a sorcerer by his Kulin nation subjects upon seeing their frozen, fixed image!
