For as long as I’ve been a journalist, the battle lines have been drawn between miners and environmentalists. That divide no longer works.

It might seem perverse to many but to go green we are going to need one of the biggest increases in mining the world has ever seen. 

That’s because minerals like copper, cobalt, nickel and lithium are all vital components in solar panels, wind turbines and the batteries which power electric cars.

Putting it bluntly; to go green we need to get our hands dirty.

For Australia, which has all the minerals to power the shift to green energy, this is a giant economic opportunity and one that could underwrite decades of future prosperity.

The problem is that many communities don’t feel mining companies care sufficiently about their local environment and are demanding governments enforce tougher standards. 

And with China dominating the control and supply of these critical minerals, many nations are keeping a close eye on Australia’s mining operations in the hope of breaking China’s dominance.

Tonight, we will take you around Australia – from King Island to Tasmania, then Darwin and Broken Hill to see how this latest boom is changing Australia.
