AceBreakingNews – A South Australian police officer has been jailed for sexually assaulting a teenage girl.

Jordan Lloyd Koch, 37, was found guilty of unlawful sexual intercourse and two counts of indecent assault.

The District Court heard the victim was 15 years old when Koch sexually assaulted her, after “testing the waters” with behaviour including sexualised comments.

Judge Liesl Kudelka sentenced Koch to three years and three months jail with a non-parole period of 20 months.

“As a police officer you should have known better,” Judge Kudelka said.

The court heard the victim had been deeply affected by the abuse and continued to suffer from mental health issues associated with the offending.

She told the court in a victim impact statement that the abuse had turned her world upside down.

“She told you that she is grieving the little girl she feels she’s lost, she’s also lost sleep, had panic attacks, developed an eating disorder and felt like life was no longer worth living,” Judge Kudelka said.

“She told you that she trusted you and wished you had just let her be.

“It is plain to anyone who heard her read her victim impact statement that she has been on a difficult journey which is continuing for her.”

Judge Kudelka said one of the insidious aspects of sexual offending was that it often left victims feeling guilt and shame, when they had done nothing wrong.

The judge told Koch that he was the one who should carry the burden of his own actions.

“You’re the one who should feel ashamed, you should feel guilty, and you are the only one to blame,” Judge Kudelka said.

“You let your attraction towards her get out of control.

“You are solely responsible for where you find yourself now. Your predicament is entirely down to you and your loss of self-control.”

The court heard Koch had won medals for his work with the CFS and police and had been highly regarded.

But it also was told he lost his job after his crimes came to light.

Members of Koch’s family attended court to support him and cried after the sentence was delivered.

At the end of her sentencing Judge Kudelka gave a message directly to the victim, who was in court with her family.

“I truly hope that you get back and are able to complete your education and that you find a lot of strength in what you have achieved in this process,” Judge Kudelka told the teenager.

“Things will get better for you.”

The teenager whispered a teary “thank you” as the judge left the bench.
