The remarkable sculpture known as the ‘Dignity of Earth and Sky,’ or simply ‘Dignity,’ is a magnificent fifty-foot stainless steel statue near Chamberlain, South Dakota. It was crafted by the renowned artist Dale Claude Lamphere to honour the women of the Sioux Nation. This awe-inspiring artwork depicts an Indigenous woman adorned in a Plains-style dress, gracefully receiving a star quilt that symbolises the rich culture of the Lakota and Dakota peoples.
Gifted to the State of South Dakota in 2014, the sculpture was unveiled in September 2016. Standing at an impressive height of fifty feet, with dimensions of 16 feet in depth and 32 feet in width, the statue captures attention with its striking presence. Notably, the quilt showcased in the sculpture features over 100 blue diamond shapes that elegantly move with the wind, adding a dynamic element to the artwork.
The ‘Dignity’ sculpture stands as a powerful representation of resilience and strength inherent in South Dakota’s Native cultures. It has received widespread acclaim from both the Native community and visitors alike. The image of ‘Dignity’ has even been featured on auto license plates in South Dakota, further exemplifying its significance and recognition.
In the future, there are plans to include the names of federally recognised tribes on a stainless steel band encircling the statue’s base. This addition will acknowledge and honour the diverse Native tribes that contribute to the rich tapestry of South Dakota’s cultural heritage.
With its profound symbolism of dignity, perseverance, and resistance, the ‘Dignity of Earth and Sky’ sculpture stands tall as a testament to the enduring spirit of the women of the Sioux Nation and the Native cultures of South Dakota.
