telegraph
The Sunday Telegraph leads with the pledge from Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer to slash “mind-boggling” NHS bureaucracy. He writes in the paper the situation for NHS patients is “intolerable and dangerous”. He also outlined plans for reforms including turning GPs into direct NHS employees and allowing patients to bypass the family doctor to make self-referrals to specialists. The paper observes it will be seen as a break from Labour’s “traditional veneration” of the NHS.
Observer
The Observer reports a “serious Cabinet split has opened up” with Health Secretary Steve Barclay wanting more money for all NHS staff except doctors, while Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Chancellor Jeremy Hunt are refusing to budge from their line that no more can be offered.
Sun
The Sun splashes on a picture of the scene in Euston, London, where a seven-year-old girl was shot. Police received reports of shots being fired from a moving vehicle. The girl suffered life-threatening injuries, and five other people were injured. The paper reports Home Secretary Suella Braverman said she was “deeply concerned by the shocking shooting”.
Mirror
The Mirror also leads on the same story with a picture of officers at the scene in Euston. The Mirror reports emergency services were called to St Aloysius Church at around 13:30 on Saturday, where mourners had gathered.
Sunday Times
The Sunday Times reports peace talks between Prince Harry and the Royal Family could be held, under plans being discussed by those close to the King. It writes insiders believe a reconciliation is “the only way forward” following the release of the prince’s memoir, and it must happen before the King’s coronation on 6 May, which Harry and Meghan are expected to attend, to stop it “becoming a circus”.
Sunday People
“Half of NHS docs in mental health crisis” headlines the Sunday People. The paper reports figures from the Hospital Consultants and Specialists Association that show 52% suffered poor mental health in the last 12 months.
Daily Star
The Daily Star splashes on a picture of reality TV personality Joey Essex, who is starring in Dancing On Ice, alongside his professional skater partner and a ghost. Essex claims his “well-annoying” ghost buddy haunts his home.

The Observer says Rishi Sunak is under pressure as a result of a Cabinet split on NHS pay. The paper reports that Health Secretary Steve Barclay privately urged unions to lobby the prime minister over an improved pay offer for nurses and ambulance workers. It says Mr Barclay is now in favour of more money for all health staff, apart from doctors, but Chancellor Jeremy Hunt and Mr Sunak are still of the opinion that no more can be offered.

The Sunday People reports that more than half of hospital doctors have experienced poor mental health in the past year, as the current situation in the NHS puts more strain on them. The paper says many staff who have no history of anxiety are now having panic attacks, with some staff saying this has happened while on shift.

The Children’s Commissioner for England, Dame Rachel de Souza, has told the Sunday Telegraph she believes teachers will put vulnerable children at risk if they go on strike. She says pupils have already sacrificed enough during the pandemic and can’t afford more disruption to their learning, just as routines return to normal. Her intervention comes ahead of the results of ballots on industrial action by the National Education Union and the National Association of Head Teachers this week.

“Horror” is the word used by both the Sun on Sunday and the Sunday Mirror to describe the shooting outside a church during a funeral in central London yesterday. A seven-year-old girl was critically injured during the incident. The Sunday Express has spoken to one mourner who said the attack began as people left the church and were preparing to release doves.

The Sunday Times reports that when Boris Johnson was prime minister he secured a credit facility worth up to £800,000 to – as the paper says – “fund his life in Downing Street”. It says this was achieved thanks to the backing of a Canadian businessman and distant relative of Mr Johnson’s, Sam Blyth. The former prime minister said all arrangements had been properly declared.

The Sunday Mirror says the firm of a Conservative party donor that was paid £11m to deliver PPE to the NHS during the pandemic is now getting £4.5m to incinerate it. According to the paper, the company has been hired to dispose of kit that was found to be “unusable”. The newspaper says there are no allegations of any wrongdoing by Clipper Logistics or its founder, Steve Parker – but the arrangement has raised further questions about such contracts.

Some of the papers cover the Only Fools and Horses actor, Nicholas Lyndhurst, joining the cast of the sequel to the US sitcom Frasier. He’s due to play Alan Cornwall, an old college friend of Frasier who is now a university professor. The Sunday Express calls the move “genius”, while the Sun on Sunday says the new show will see Lyndhurst and Kelsey Grammar reunite after appearing together in the Man of La Mancha for the English National Opera in 2019.
